Maintaining Professional Liability Insurance: A Key Requirement for RMTs/MTs
April 2026
RMTs/MTs holding a General Certificate of Registration are required by the Massage Therapy Act, 1991, to maintain professional liability insurance.
Maintaining professional liability insurance supports regulatory compliance, reflects accountable and safe practice, and aligns with CMTO’s mandate to protect the public. It ensures patients have a means of recourse if they experience harm or injury from Massage Therapy treatment and helps RMTs/MTs sustain uninterrupted practice when claims arise. It also reinforces professional credibility by demonstrating diligence.
CMTO conducts an annual audit, randomly selecting approximately three (3) percent of General Certificate holders, requesting a submission of their certificate of insurance. It is important that RMTs/MTs comply with the audit because if an RMT/MT does not submit their certificate of insurance to CMTO, it may result in a suspension of registration or could be considered as professional misconduct.
This mandatory requirement is in the best interest of RMTs/MTs and the public as it protects RMTs’/MTs’ livelihood and the integrity of the Massage Therapy profession.
