Acupuncture and Massage Therapy: What RMTs/MTs Should Know
April 2026
While only a small number of RMTs/MTs practise acupuncture, all RMTs/MTs are responsible for knowing the Standard of Practice: Acupuncture. Some key requirements RMTs/MTs should be aware of include:
- Scope of Practice: acupuncture performed by an RMT/MT must be within the Scope of Practice for Massage Therapy and meet CMTO’s definition of acupuncture
- Education and Authorization: RMTs/MTs must first complete a confirmed acupuncture education program and apply for and be granted authorization by CMTO before offering acupuncture as part of their practice
- Safety and Infection Prevention: acupuncture involves specific safety expectations, including infection prevention and control measures, appropriate needle use and disposal, anatomical considerations, and documentation
Understanding the Standard supports informed discussions with patients, reinforces awareness of professional obligations, and helps RMTs/MTs recognize potential safety or regulatory concerns that may arise in practice.
