In June 2019, amendments to the Cannabis Act were passed. The new amendments came into force on October 17, 2019 and include the production and sale of three new categories of cannabis: edible cannabis, cannabis extracts and cannabis topicals. With new categories of cannabis becoming legally available in Ontario, CMTO reviewed and updated the Practice Resource: Cannabis. An FAQ to help answer client questions about cannabis topicals is here.
After conducting research, CMTO concluded the recent amendments to the Cannabis Act do not change CMTO’s guidance on cannabis in Massage Therapy practice situations. CMTO would like to remind RMTs that:
- Offering or selling cannabis products (including topicals) in their practice is prohibited under the Cannabis Act.
- There is insufficient information available regarding the risks associated with the use of topicals. For this reason, RMTs should not apply a client’s own cannabis topical (in any form) to the client during treatment.
