On August 8, 2022, the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) and Prometric (CMTO’s exam provider) released results for the Objectively Structured Clinical Evaluation (OSCE, or practical examination) to some 740 candidates.

These results had been delayed by approximately two weeks because CMTO became aware that examination content may have been provided to or received by candidates in violation of the Rules of Conduct in the CMTO Candidate Handbook. Delaying the release of results allowed us to investigate and obtain necessary evidence.

Cheating is a serious breach of the obligation of a regulated health professional – and those taking steps to become one – to act with a high degree of professionalism and integrity. CMTO is taking these reports of cheating seriously and is thoroughly investigating.

While no conclusions should be drawn about individual candidates while the investigation is underway, the results for candidates from at least one Massage Therapy program will be delayed further. In addition, CMTO is investigating two RMTs.

The exams continue to be administered. The OSCE and Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) exams help CMTO determine whether an applicant has the necessary knowledge, skill, and judgement to practise safely and independently. A comprehensive and valid exam helps maintain client trust in the Massage Therapy profession.

Candidates who have information to share about this situation are urged to contact CMTO at professionalconduct@cmto.com. Failing to cooperate with CMTO’s investigation will impact a candidate’s future application for registration.
