Language Fluency Requirement for Registrants
The demonstration of reasonable fluency in English or French is a requirement for registration as a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO). This requirement is articulated in Ontario Regulation 864/93 of the Massage Therapy Act, 1991.
Communication forms the basis for safe and effective Massage Therapy care. RMTs must be able to communicate effectively with their clients as well as with other healthcare professionals involved in their clients’ care. They must also be able to communicate with CMTO because being able to understand and implement College materials related to registration, quality assurance, complaints and discipline is an essential part of an RMT’s accountability as a regulated health professional.
CMTO’s Council passed a policy, effective July 1, 2014, that all examination candidates whose first language is neither English nor French and whose secondary school education was not completed in English or French, must meet the requirements of the College’s Language Fluency Policy.
An updated Language Fluency Policy was approved by Council on December 7, 2015 for implementation February 1, 2016. The updated policy is available at the links below:
