Letter of Standing or Confirmation of Registration. Which One is Right for You?

April 2025

Thinking of practising Massage Therapy in a different province? Considering registration in another healthcare profession? Preparing to apply for work or school?

The following information outlines the differences between the Letter of Standing and Confirmation of Registration:

Letter of Standing

A Letter of Standing is a document that verifies an individual’s status. The letter includes important information about the registrant such as their registration history, description of the type of registration held, if there are any terms, conditions, or limitations imposed on their profile, or details of any disciplinary actions or professional conduct concerns. It can be used for the following two purposes:

  1. For Registered Massage Therapists/Massage Therapists (RMTs/MTs) holding a General or Inactive Certificate who are seeking registration in another Canadian province where Massage Therapy is a regulated profession. Currently, Massage Therapy is regulated in the following four other provinces:
    • British Columbia
    • Newfoundland & Labrador
    • New Brunswick
    • Prince Edward Island
  1. For RMTs/MTs intending to register with another regulated profession within Ontario, such as the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario or the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario.

Confirmation of Registration

A Letter of Confirmation of Registration is a document confirming an individual’s current and previous registration with a regulated profession. This option can be used for current or former RMTs/MTs who want to request confirmation of their current registration class and status with CMTO. This confirmation is intended for various purposes, such as:

  • Employment
  • Volunteering
  • Insurance Companies
  • Educational Institutions, or
  • Registration in a jurisdiction where Massage Therapy is unregulated

Where can you go to request a letter?

To request either the Letter of Standing or Confirmation of Registration, simply access CMTO’s Registrant Portal. Select the Document Request option located on the left-hand side of the screen to initiate your request.
