Ask the Practice Specialist: Do I need to get the client’s written consent to share their health information?

June 2023

If RMTs are sharing personal health information (PHI) with a third-party, such as an insurance company or lawyer, yes.

If RMTs are sharing PHI with another regulated health professional who is also treating the client for the purposes of providing care, they do not need written consent. However, if a client has previously withdrawn their consent for other health professional(s) to have access to their PHI, RMTs would need consent.

PHI is information that is collected for the purpose of providing Massage Therapy (in oral or recorded form) that identifies a client.

The rules for sharing information are published in the Guide to Record Keeping and the Standard of Practice: Privacy and Confidentiality. Additional guidance about sharing health information within the circle of care is also available in the Circle of Care: Sharing Personal Health Information for Health-Care Purposes.
