Illegal Practitioners/Unauthorized Practice
Under provisions of the Massage Therapy Act, 1991,
only individuals who are registered members with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario are
permitted to use the protected title of “Massage Therapist”, and/or “Registered Massage Therapist”
or claiming to provide “massage therapy” or use any variation of these two titles or abbreviations,
including but not limited to “M.T.” and “R.M.T.”
In addition the College of Massage Therapists has secured the following protected titles under the Federal Trade-marks Act:
Massage Therapist
Registered Massage Therapist
M.T.
R.M.T.
Massage Therapy
Therapeutic Massage
Massothérapie
Massage thérapeutique
Massothérapeute
Sometimes, individuals may have taken courses in massage therapy within Ontario
or in other provinces. In taking these courses, these individuals may be aware of
some aspects of the profession but they cannot refer to themselves as a Massage
Therapist nor are they permitted to refer to their care or services provided as
the practice of massage therapy in Ontario. To verify that someone is a Massage
Therapist, you can search the Register of members under Find an RMT.
In addition some individuals may hold membership in any one of the various,
associations or organizations within Canada that provide them with use of one of
the protected titles listed above and a registration number. These titles and registration
numbers do not apply within Ontario and any person found using any protected title within the
province regardless of the membership in an association or education are considered illegal
practitioners engaged in unauthorized practice.
Those persons who engage in or who make allowances for
illegal practitioners place the public in harm’s way.
The College of Massage Therapists of Ontario is committed to protection of the public interest in these circumstances.
These individuals listed below have been, or are in the process of being, prosecuted under the Massage Therapy Act, 1991
and the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991. These individuals are not members of the College of Massage Therapists of
Ontario and are not entitled to practice massage therapy in Ontario or hold themselves out as a "Massage Therapist",
"Registered Massage Therapist", "M.T." or "R.M.T.":

Notice Regarding Brandon Raynor’s School of Natural Therapies
(an educational program that does not lead to Registration with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario
and the right to use the protected titles, "Massage Therapist and Registered Massage Therapist").
The College of Massage Therapists of Ontario and the Ontario Massage Therapist Association are aware of Mr. Brandon Raynor and his activities in providing
massage therapy education in Ontario and his comments regarding massage therapy as a regulated health profession.
The College has been actively looking into Mr. Raynor’s activities for a couple of years and have also been in contact with the
College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia in this regard. In addition, information about Mr. Raynor’s
activities has been shared with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and the Ministry of Small
Business and Consumer Services both of whom may have an interest in the claims he is making and his educational
programs that will not prepare individuals to take the Certification examinations in Ontario.
Notwithstanding these efforts, members of the profession must remember that massage therapy is not a protected
scope of practice and, as such, it is in the "public domain". However, because the College of Massage Therapists
of Ontario holds the federal "Official Marks" on the terms massage therapy and therapeutic massage and the title,
massage therapist, and the Massage Therapy Act, 1991 protects the title of Massage Therapist for use by members
of the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario only, Mr. Raynor is not permitted to use these terms and titles
in connection with his business in Canada and specifically Ontario. The matter is complicated because much of
Mr. Raynor’s advertising is international in scope and this proves difficult to prosecute.
It is regrettable that in order to promote his own business, Mr. Raynor feels the need to minimize the value
that the Registered Massage Therapists provide to the public of Ontario through their commitment to safe, ethical,
compassionate and client-centred care.
Update: The Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities has issued a restraining order against Brandon
Raynor’s School of Natural Therapies Pty Ltd. Click here for more details.
